Groundwater Vistas (GV) is the leading software package for 3D groundwater flow and contaminant transport modelling, calibration and optimisation using the MODFLOW suite of codes.
GV is a pre- and post-processor for MODFLOW modelling codes, designed as a model-independent system which means that you only need to learn one software program in order to use a wide range of groundwater models.
GV6 comes in 4 levels; Premium level has been added which incorporates the very fast SAMG solver.
See here for details of what’s new in Groundwater Vistas Version 6.
GV Standard
A graphical design system for MODFLOW and other similar models, such as MODPATH and MT3D. All of the supported models may be run from within the GV environment which means that you simply click a button to create data sets, run the model, and display the results. No other software offers you as seamless an interface to such a wide variety of models! Click here for more details on Groundwater Vistas Standard.
GV Advanced
Groundwater Vistas is the first modelling environment for the MODFLOW family of models that allows for the quantification of uncertainty with the ability to run stochastic simulations. The Advanced level adds Monte Carlo versions of MODFLOW, MODPATH and MT3D plus Geostatistical Simulators SWIFT support and more to the Standard level features.Click here for more details on Groundwater Vistas Advanced.
GV Professional (formerly Enterprise)
This level adds AquiferWin32, Winflow, GW3D, MODHMS support (not in the initial release) and GSFLOW support (not in the initial release) to the Advanced level features. Click here for more details on Groundwater Vistas Professional.
GV Premium
This level of Groundwater Vistas adds the SAMG solver to the Professional level features. SAMG (Algebraic Multigrid Methods for Systems) is the most efficient solver available for use with MODFLOW and depending on the application and problem size, the computational cost can be drastically reduced.
Groundwater Vistas is a graphical user interface (GUI) visualization tool which is compatible with MODFLOW-SURFACT. Two-dimensional visualization is utilized in both plan and cross-sectional views for contour plots, pathlines, and velocity vectors. Three-dimensional animation is the most effective way to observe changes in parameters, head and contaminant concentrations in a transient simulation, piezometric surfaces, pathlines, velocity vectors, and isosurfaces of contaminant plumes.
64 and 32-Bit Versions of Groundwater Vistas
In Groundwater Vistas Version 6, ESI is offering both 32-bit and 64-bit versions. This can be a bit confusing because most computers now come with the 64-bit version of Windows 7 installed. However, most software is still only 32-bit. So the first thing to remember is that 32-bit software runs fine on the 64-bit versions of Windows. The 32-bit versions are just limited to 2 gigabytes of memory when they run.
The reason we point this out is that the Standard version of Groundwater Vistas 6 is only available in the 32-bit flavour. So, if you have GV6 Standard and are using a 64-bit version of Windows, everything will work just fine. If you have GV6 Advanced, Professional, or Premium you would probably install the 64-bit version on the 64-bit version of Windows because this version is a lot faster and can access all available memory (RAM).
